Choosing the Perfect Letterpress Printing Ink: A Comprehensive Guide

If you’re in the world of letterpress printing, you understand that the choice of ink is crucial to achieving beautiful and timeless results. Among the various options available, letterpress rubber-based printing ink stands out as a top choice for many printers. In this guide, we’ll delve into everything you need to know about letterpress ink, its types, colour options, and why it’s the preferred choice for artisan and fine printing.

Letterpress Printing Ink: An Overview

Letterpress printing ink is specially formulated for use with letterpress printing, a traditional method that creates a tactile, embossed effect on paper. The choice of ink plays a significant role in the outcome of your printed pieces.

Types of Letterpress Printing Ink

  1. Rubber-Based Ink: This is the most common type of ink used in letterpress printing. It consists of pigments or dyes suspended in a rubber-based medium. Rubber-based ink offers excellent consistency and transfer properties, making it ideal for a wide range of applications. It is known for its slow drying time, allowing for more extended working periods. It’s a preferred choice when you require more time to achieve the desired print quality.
  2. Oil-Based Ink: Oil-based letterpress ink is an ink formulation that has stood the test of time. It consists of pigments or dyes suspended in an oil-based medium, typically linseed oil. It has a quicker drying time than rubber-based ink and is suited to most boards, especially coated.
  3. Water-Washable Ink: Water-washable letterpress ink is an eco-friendly option that can be cleaned up easily with water. It’s an excellent choice for environmentally conscious printers.

Letterpress Ink Colours

Letterpress ink is available in a wide array of colours, including:

  • Universal and Pantone Black
  • Several reds, including Warm Red, Rhodamine and 032 Red
  • Lots of blues too, Process Blue, 072 Blue, Reflex Blue
  • Green, Yellow and more
  • Metallic Gold and Silver
  • Fluros
  • Custom Colour Mixing – we can have ink mixed to your own Pantone Colour reference

The choice of colour can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your printed pieces. Custom colour mixing services are available to match your specific design requirements.

Advantages of Letterpress Rubber-Based Printing Ink

  1. Deep Impression: Letterpress printing is renowned for its deep impression, and rubber-based ink helps achieve this tactile effect effortlessly.
  2. Color Vibrancy: The ink produces rich and vibrant colors, making your designs pop on paper.
  3. Versatility: Letterpress ink works well with various paper types, including cotton, textured, and specialty papers.
  4. Longevity: Prints created with letterpress ink are durable and resist fading over time, ensuring your work stands the test of time.

Our tubes hold 100g of your favourite inks. We have all of the rubber based and oil based on there now as well as the fluorescents and metallics. We even have a letterpress printed swatch of the Fluorescents, in case you wanted to see how they come out, if you would like one regardless, just get in touch and we’ll pop one in th epost, a similar thing for the other ranges will be made up soon too.
